Written in 2011, the novel elaborates on the loss of the author’s second son Uri, killed at the age of twenty by an anti-tank missile on the Lebanese front in 2006. In an age where dominant cultures tolerate mourning with annoyance - where we live as if we were eternal, almost childlike gods - Grossman courageously ventures into the difficult journey into death and translates it into words that we recognise as authentic and our own. On stage, the written word becomes said, lived, shared in an extraordinary collective journey that only theatre makes possible, to perform the rite of greeting that allows life to continue.
